Tedi Brunetti – The Queen of Pittsburgh

Written by: Lee Callaghan

Now here is something fresh. Tedi Brunetti ascends her throne upon the stage, dons her hands free mic and lays down a jam which snaps me to attention. Enter the bass funk, and blues guitar slides in, and we have a mature, competent, delightful blues jam. Ok, my head is bobbing, I’m digging this when suddenly Tedi announces; “I’m surrounded by empty beer bottles, cigarettes, overflowing ashtrays.” Same Old Blues from Tedi’s latest offering; The Queen of Pittsburgh is a gritty, visceral yet poised blues shuffle. First single, Evil Woman will be accompanied with a clever video illustrating the musical dynamics which makes this project so proficient. Title-track The Queen of Pittsburgh, is a humble, down-tempo groove with an underlying funk, is a shout-out to hometown Pittsburgh. What makes this track so appealing is the way Tedi is able to paint a picture of a city with a thousand characteristics, “Everybody leaves, and comes home again.”

Although Tedi is the bandleader, singer and percussionist, this project features adept playing all around. Assembling a team of veteran players stimulates and supports the songs and allows Tedi to showcase her diversity throughout each of these nine tracks. Each track on The Queen of Pittsburgh draws from influences and experience in Blues, Classic Rock, Jazz and Soul leaving the listener gasping at the end of this journey, yet eager to jump right back in. On a production note, the polished well-produced sound Tedi achieves throughout this album is coupled with a raw, indie vibe which allows the listener to get a live feel for this act. Put this album alongside Bonnie Raitt’s Luck of the Draw, to grasp the potential Tedi Brunetti possesses with this release. “I won’t stop kicking ass, until they make me The Queen of Pittsburgh.”
