Jet Stream – Strawberry Moon
Written by: Lee Callaghan
Following the success of their previous EP release The EP (with streams in over 80 countries), Jet Stream
are back with their second captivating standalone single. Strawberry Moon is a collaborative effort featuring dynamic instrumentation, crafty vocal harmonies (more on that soon), centered over a metaphorical theme of safety, belonging, and hope. Riding the coattails of the industry acclaim from Over
You, Strawberry Moon is a counterbalance to the electric, synth-heavy previous release, also clearly demonstrating the sonic evolution of the artists from their debut single Electric. This happy, light-hearted
soft-rock track features a more laid-back funk, which strikes a chord with audiences looking to gather again, and party with many of their friends. Featuring the majestic vocals of Katrinus, Jet Stream opens up their sound spectrum with a call and response style track highlighting the tenor/soprano juxtaposition which gives this track its true significance. Of course, Jet Stream does not only rely on the vibrant styles of Katrinus to accomplish this dynamic; songwriting duo, Joe Molnar (lead vocals), and Saurav Sridhar (backing vocals) provide many instances where they gel superlatively as a vocal tandem.
Strawberry Moon, as stated, is a feel-good track. This reviewer pulls imagery of belonging, togetherness,
and comfort from the well-executed lyrical form. As Joe Molnar delivers his verse, he gets caught up in
the words and syncopates through the choruses adding a connection to the listener which is sorely lacking from most contemporary pop offerings. His astute use of time changes allows him to deliver one thought on the downbeat, and just before you expect the thought to resolve, he pulls back and waits before handing the listener another metaphor to deal with. “Someday I want to go after all those dreams that you couldn’t capture, and as long as we stay on our little pasture, a Strawberry Moon will watch over us tonight”. Reading this chorus, everything rhymes, it all fits into its little pocket, yet the performance is so out of that pocket I almost screamed a sigh of relief that a vocalist is still able to move me, and offer something fresh and exciting.
Jet Stream is not all vocal harmonies and rich lyrical imagery, however. Joe Molnar provides interesting guitar melodies throughout Strawberry Moon, trading off these chord progressions with clever synth fills. And, of course, the back end is tight with Saurav Sridhar filling in the rhythmic punch with his bass groove and super-tight drumming, (would be very interesting seeing this performed live). This multi-timbral approach is only possible if the recording is captured exactly, with each frequency delicately placed in its respective range and blended smoothly to allow the listener to receive a full soundscape. Jet Stream are a well-practiced, tight, cohesive unit, as this track entertains the listener while challenging them with each subtle little nuance they discover with each listen. Pay special attention to the discerning way Jet Stream utilizes a tempo change after the first stanza, this seemingly out-of-nowhere time change results in a snap to attention shaking the listener while bringing them nicely back to the main theme.
Strawberry Moon would be an excellent addition to any Rock, Adult Contemporary, and Pop Radio format
playlist with its infectious, sing-along chorus, the fresh approach they harnessed in a seemingly typical
soft-rock offering, and the wonderful vocal talent they displayed. Let me be clear, Strawberry Moon is not your typical, derivative soft-rock track, it is interesting, competent, and shows great promise for the future of this musical duo. A must addition for your summer and beyond playlists.
