Aleex – Reais
Written by: Lee Callaghan
With dynamic beats and clever instrumentation, Aleex delivers Reais; a complete piece of trap music which entertains his audiences, and attracts new followers. A native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil Aleex produces trap music that appeals to a wide audience outside of Brazil. With the effective use of traditional Brazilian sounds coupled with contemporary trap beats, Aleex tones down the energy on Reais to deliver a down-tempo groove with a deep bass funk. The introduction of this track features some bright and highly proficient guitar sounds which set the melody for the trap beat to follow. These wonderful guitar melodies are also from a live guitar, instead of samples which really makes them stand-out. As Aleex develops his theme, he experiments with many different rhythmic concepts which resolve back to the deep funk. As each cadence offers a slightly different tension Aleex pulls the listener back and gets the feet tapping, and the head-bobbing every time. What I really found was a stand-out aspect to Reais, is the way Aleex dropped to silence before the recapitulation section of the track. This helped solidify the overall presence of Aleex’s unique harmonies with his chosen instruments. With that being said each sample is well-executed as this artist showed his maturity and professionalism by not overusing any one sample. The samples that are heavily used throughout are set to the background and as an accent only. Aleex delivers his vocals strictly in Portuguese, which puts me at a disadvantage of not understanding his overall message, however, the majestic and elegant vocals strike a defiant tone while maintaining a sultry, seductive composure. Aleex delivers his vocals in multiple registers which is a daring move over this underlying beat, Aleex clearly showcases his ability to maintain the key and resolve each higher degree of his scale with ease.
From a production perspective, Reais is a clear, crisp, and brilliant mix. With plenty of allotted headroom left in the mix, audiences can turn this one up extra loud, not worrying about distortion or muddiness in the overtones. Reais would be an excellent addition to any club mix, the deep bass and syncopated groove make this track easy to dance to, and quite enjoyable to listen to over and over again. Reais could also see commercial success on any Dance/Urban radio playlist, for these same aspects, and the very tasty vocals which would grab a vast audience’s attention. A very enjoyable track, as a debut single begging for a follow-up soon. Even though the vocals are in Portuguese, do not let that steer you from this track. In fact, the soft, tender vocals do not require translation, just sit back and take this one in.
